Abstract: Quantum Technology and the Risk Strategy You Never Knew You Needed

Abstract: Today’s world is driven by technology and digital information. Digital information has become so entrenched in all aspects of our lives and society, that the recent growth in information production appears unstoppable. In 2018, the total amount of data in the world was 33 zettabytes (ZB) – the equivalent of 33 trillion gigabytes. This grew to 59ZB in 2020 and is predicted to reach a mind-boggling 175ZB by 2025.
To make sense of the ever-increasing amount of data being produced, we must turn to quantum technology. The promise of quantum technology, in theory, will transform current computing capabilities, enabling us to tackle computational challenges previously considered impossible. The scale and speed at which quantum technology operates promises advancement in many fields.
While many are discussing the benefits of quantum technology, we also have to aware of the dangers. As with any “new” technology, the risks must be identified and mitigated as best as possible. Due to the potential benefits of quantum technology, both private companies and governments are in a race to achieve optimum quantum technology capabilities.
